About

Celluloid & the City is a film and culture publication exploring Hollywood history, classic cinema, actors, stars, scandal, literature and adaptation.

Founded by writer and editor Claire Meadows, C&C grew from a long-standing fascination with the stories behind the screen: the careers that flourished and disappeared, the films that became cultural touchstones, and the complicated lives and relationships that have shaped our understanding of Hollywood.

The focus is particularly on classic Hollywood and twentieth-century cinema, with a fascination for the people who made it — from celebrated stars to overlooked performers, and from familiar stories to the stranger corners of film history.

Alongside Hollywood history, C&C explores the relationship between film and literature, including adaptation, authorship and the ways stories change when they move from page to screen.

Expect essays, profiles, commentary and pieces from the archive, covering subjects including classic Hollywood women, actors and stars, film history, scandal and celebrity, literary adaptation and the enduring appeal of cinema.

C&C is not interested simply in nostalgia.
